Morning Star.png Nepal: Students Demand to go Back to School The Morning Star, London, 28 November 2015 Tens of thousands of Nepalese students protested in the capital Kathmandu yesterday against India's economic blockade. The students lined the Ring Road, which encircles the city, to demand an immediate lifting of the undeclared embargo that has led to acute shortages of fuel and medicine. Schools have been forced to extend holidays and cancel classes because of the fuel crisis. Despite a deal with China to break India's stranglehold in the Himalayan nation, rationing of petrol and diesel is now so tight that fuel is only available for buses and taxis. "We are here to protest against the Indian blockade that has made it very difficult for us to attend our classes," said 13-year-old Kathmandu schoolboy Pramod Basnet. "We are here to say education is our right." Indian border officials have prevented goods lorries crossing the border since violent protests by the royalist Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RRP) and members of the Madhesi ethnic groups against the country's new constitution began in August. India claims that lorry drivers are at risk from the riots which have killed at least 50 people, but no such attacks have occurred. The Madhesis object to the division of their traditional homeland between two of seven new administrative states defined by the constitution, while the RRP is opposed to the secular republican nature of the new state. RRP President and Deputy Prime Minister Kamal Thapa served as home minister under former king Gyanendra until his overthrow in 2006.
