SADTU Teachers at Work, with logo, smaller.png 11 December 2015 SADTU Welcomes the White Paper on the National Health Insurance (NHI) NHI will bring equity in accessing quality health care The South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU) welcomes the long-awaited release of the White Paper on the National Health Insurance (NHI) for public comment. We believe that the NHI will go a long way towards ensuring access to quality health care to everyone in South Africa irrespective of their socio-economic status. The provision of a good quality health system is a human right and the country can no longer continue to make this right a privilege for a few who are rich while the poor majority continue to receive second rate health care. The majority of South Africans can no longer be denied the best health care and be allowed to die just because they cannot afford whereas there are many means to assist them to access better health care. As a union in the education sector, we are fully aware of the fact that health is a key social determinant in the development of a child and has a direct impact on the performance and progress of a learner at school. We see the implementation of NHI as a key factor towards the improvement of the performance of learners in schools and therefore enriching their lives and futures.
