Liberia Is Ebola-Free

Epidemic Has Ended

The World Health Organisation hailed an end to the West African Ebola
epidemic yesterday as Liberia was declared free of the disease.

Liberia, which along with Sierra Leone and Guinea was at the centre of the
2014 outbreak, was first declared free of the disease last May, but new
cases emerged twice - setting the 42-day all-clear period back to zero.

The epidemic dwarfed all previous outbreaks of the haemorrhagic fever,
killing some 11,300 people and leaving many of the 17,000 survivors with
lingering symptoms.

"While this is an important milestone and a very important step forward, we
have to say that the job is still not done," said WHO director of emergency
risk assessment and humanitarian response Rick Brennan.

"There is still ongoing risk of re-emergence of the disease because of
persistence of the virus in a proportion of survivors."

Ebola virus is highly contagious, being transferred through all bodily
fluids - even sweat on an infected person's skin. It has an extremely high
mortality rate, around 40 per cent.

Both these factors make containing and treating the disease difficult and
hazardous. The WHO reported that 10 per cent of the victims were healthcare
workers.

Mr Brennan acknowledged that the slow international response to the outbreak
had contributed to the death toll.

While the US sent soldiers to the region, Cuba sent hundreds of doctors and
nurses, continuing its proud tradition of medical co-operation and
solidarity with other developing nations.
