South Africa:

Political Tensions Surface in Shooting at SACP Rally

The Morning Star, London, 28 January 2016

Communist Party (SACP) leader Blade Nzimande urged party members in his
KwaZulu-Natal constituency to focus on organisation rather than revenge
yesterday after an armed attack on a party rally.

Two people died, including 69-year-old SACP member Philip Dlamini, and five
were wounded on Sunday in shooting at the meeting at the Kandokweni sports
grounds in Durban.

Police said that car tyres had also been slashed and windscreens damaged in
what appears to have been a politically motivated attack.

On a visit to the area to meet Mr Dlamini's family, the SACP general
secretary acknowledged tensions between the African National Congress and
the SACP but stressed that the tripartite alliance, which includes the
Congress of South African Trade Unions, needed to address its problems,
acknowledging that "there are certainly points of concern for us, but I am
sure that we can come together and as a collective find solutions.

"We have to start by being honest in identifying the problems we are
facing," Mr Nzimande said.
