New Age2.png Alliance 'tensions' top council agenda Peter Ramothwala, The New Age, Johannesburg, 11 February 2016 Tensions in the ANC alliance are expected to top the agenda when its political council (PC) convenes early next week. According to various sources close to the PC, the ANC is pulling out all stops to ensure unity ahead of the much-anticipated local government elections due to be held this year. A top ANC official told The New Age that tensions between the ruling party and its alliance partners, COSATU, Sanco and the SACP are having a serious impact on their effectiveness ahead of the local government elections. Tensions including physical confrontations in Kwazulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and North West are raising eyebrows, the official said. "We are worried that the infighting leads to a growing number of independent councillors who still believe that the ANC is the only party that could better their lives. We will also discuss the election process for candidates, thus averting a similar fracas in Tshwane two weeks ago," he said. Alex Mashilo in TNA, 4 February 2016.jpg The meeting is scheduled to be attended by the national office bearers of the alliance. This week Sanco and SACP in KwaZulu-Natal expressed grave concerns over an increase of violent clashes in the province. Sanco provincial secretary Richard Mkhungo said there are a growing number of reported cases of violence in many candidate nomination meetings including gross violations of the ANC constitution and nomination guidelines. "Corruptive tendencies are rife in the nomination process, much against the call by the ANC leadership to ensure a clean process that is community-centred," Mkhungo said. "There are serious cases of isolation of the alliance partners in the processes, from branch to provincial levels. Without a national intervention, the overwhelming victory of the ANC in the province will definitely be negatively affected. "There is a high level of disregard affecting the integrity of the process and the ANC and this is what is highly disturbing the SACP and Sanco." ANC spokesperson Keith Khoza said the party will not communicate the agenda of the PC. In November, the SACP in Mpumalanga said there was persistent anti-communist and anti-class workers' tendencies within the liberation movement. "We are still waiting for a report from the national office into the violent attack of the SACP's Joe Slovo and Jimmy Mohlala memorial lecture by individuals wearing the mask of the ANC at Kanyamazane last year," SACP provincial secretary Bonakele Majuba said. "Anti-communist tendencies continue like the suspension of communists in the ANC, the rejection of SACP deployees by the ANC to serve in election structures, and the disruption of the SACP activities and counter-organising of SACP activities. There is no alliance in Mpumalanga." SACP spokesperson Alex Mashilo said the meeting would discuss organisational issues ahead of the local government elections.
