Morning Star.png Communist Party Rebuffs Mbeki Attack on its Leader The Morning Star, London, 16 February 2016 The South African Communist Party (SACP) hit back yesterday at former president Thabo Mbeki’s latest attacks on the movement he once served. Mr Mbeki published a letter on social media trying to single out Communist Party general secretary Blade Nzimande over his comments in 2008 welcoming the dismissal of corruption charges against his rival and current President Jacob Zuma. After years of prevarication by prosecution lawyers, Judge Chris Nicholson threw out the case, saying that it had been marred by “baleful political influence.” That led swiftly to Mr Mbeki’s recall from the presidency by the African National Congress. Communist Party spokesman Alex Mashilo pointed to recent revelations by Mr Zuma’s lawyer Michael Hulley that Mr Mbeki had offered his client 20 million rand (£870,000) to resign quietly before National Prosecuting Authority head Bulelani Ngcuka went public. Mr Ngcuka’s famous assertion that there was a “prima facie” case against Mr Zuma proved to be optimistic.
