Argentine Public Services Strike Against Political Sackings

The Morning Star, London, 24 February 2016

Argentinian civil servants will protest outside the presidential palace in
Buenos Aires today as part of a national strike over President Mauricio
Macri's politically motivated jobs cull.

The strike is being organised by the Association of State Workers and the
Argentinian Workers' Union.

Mr Macri has destroyed about 10,000 government jobs in the last two months,
with more losses to come as ministries seek targets for redundancies.

The right-wing president beat Peronist candidate Daniel Scioli, the would-be
successor to Cristina Fernandez, in November's elections.

War on state employees

Since assuming office in December, Macri has waged war on state employees.

Vice-President Gabriela Michetti has accused public-sector workers of being
"Kirchner militants," a reference to late president Nestor Kirchner, the
husband of Ms Fernandez.

The government has also introduced a protocol allowing police to break up
protests including those planned for today.
