Podemos Refuses: New Election Likely

The Morning Star, London, 3 March 2016

Spain's left-wing Podemos party apparently ended the prospect of a coalition
government with the Socialist Party (PSOE) yesterday, raising the prospect
of new elections.

PSOE leader Pedro Sanchez sought the backing of the hung parliament to form
a coalition.

But before the vote Podemos general secretary Pablo Iglesias said he would
not join a coalition with fellow newcomer, the centre-right party Citizens,
which Mr Sanchez has courted.

People's Party leader and Acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy also rejected
the Socialist bid.

Like Syriza in Greece, Podemos has seen a meteoric rise since it formed in
2014.

Mr Rajoy, who has headed a caretaker government since losing his majority in
December, said his 123 MPs would vote against Mr Sanchez's coalition.

That leaves Mr Sanchez with only the support of his 90 MPs and 40 Citizens
MPs in the 350-seat parliament.
