Morning Star.png Dubliners Recall the Easter Rising The Morning Star, London, 28 March 2016 Hundreds of thousands of Dubliners lined the streets of their city yesterday as soldiers marched solemnly to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising. The parade featured military ceremonies at key buildings seized at Easter 1916, when 1,200 rebels sought to spark a popular uprising for Ireland's national independence. The procession paused at noon outside the General Post Office on O'Connell Street, the rebel headquarters, where Padraig Pearse launched the revolt by reading the proclamation of the Irish Republic. His words were declaimed in full by Irish Defence Forces Captain Peter Kelleher. "In the name of God and of the dead generations from which she receives her old tradition of nationhood, Ireland, through us, summons her children to her flag and strikes for her freedom," Capt Kelleher said to an audience that included political leaders and grandchildren of the rebels, many wearing their relatives' Easter Rising bronze service medals.
