“HE IS an imperialist who continues to fund the DA.”

This was ANC national spokesperson Zizi Kodwa’s reaction to business tycoon
Johann Rupert’s call last week for President Jacob Zuma to step down.

Labelling Rupert as “arrogant white monopoly capitalist and a hardcore
admirer of apartheid”, Kodwa said that the party was not shocked by the
businessman’s remarks and will expose him this week.

“Over a long period he has been unduly trying to influence government
policies through funding non-government organisations.

He is an arrogant white monopoly capitalist who benefited from apartheid
and the colonial system.

We are aware of all that, we are going to unmask him this week. He is an
imperialist who continues to fund the DA. He doesn’t understand democracy
as he benefited from the apartheid regime,” Kodwa said.

Kodwa said that Rupert’s remarks “made the call for every ANC member who is
influenced or captured by businesses to come forward more relevant”.

SACP spokesperson Alex Mashilo said: “He (Rupert) must not think he has
more democratic rights than everyone else as we know he largely benefited
from apartheid.”

Rupert was reportedly responding to allegations he called Deputy President
Cyril Ramaphosa to a meeting soon after Zuma had appointed Des van Rooyen
as finance minister.

Ramaphosa denied meeting Rupert. Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Ronnie Mamoepa,
said the deputy president denied ever having such a meeting with Rupert,
Trevor Manuel and Maria
Ramos or any other business persons to discuss cabinet appointments.

“The only time Deputy President Ramaphosa engaged himself with the matter
of the finance ministry was during the meeting of the top six ANC officials
with President Jacob
Zuma on the Sunday leading to the appointment of Pravin Gordhan as the
finance minister,”

Mamoepa said. Rupert is the chairperson of luxury goods company Richemont.
He serves as non-executive chairperson of VenFin and Remgro. Rupert also
owns the L’Ormarins wine estate.

Attempts to obtain comment from Rupert through his company’s PR agency were
unsuccessful.
