SADTU:

KZN is not a jobs-for-cash hotspot

Reporter, Destiny, Johannesburg, 31 March 2016

Reports that KwaZulu-Natal was the province most affected by the
jobs-for-cash scandal were untrue, South African Democratic Teacher's
Union's (SADTU) provincial secretary, Nomarashiya Caluza, confirmed on
Wednesday

Caluza, who was addressing the media in Durban, also hit out at the DA,
saying the party viewed SADTU as a "stumbling block in realising its dream
of regime change".

"It has been peddled that KwaZulu-Natal [KZN] is the worst province in the
jobs-for-cash scandal, but going through the leaked interim report, KZN is
not like what is reported in the media."

"KZN had fewer than eight cases that were investigated. Of the eight, there
are only two cases where the Ministerial Task Team (MTT) recommended further
investigation by the authorities," said Caluza.

In 2014, City Press reported that the union, along with circuit and district
officials and school governing body members, were selling posts for R10
000-R50 000.

SADTU criticises report

Over the weekend, SADTU criticised the leaked MTT interim report saying it
lacked credibility and did not present an accurate reflection of what was
happening on the ground. The union said it was concerned that a copy of the
interim report had been leaked to the media before the parties concerned
could respond to the allegations.

According to a statement released by the union at the weekend, out of the 81
cases investigated by the MTT, only 38 were found to be worthy of further
investigation. Of the 81 cases investigated, SADTU was associated or
mentioned in 22 cases.

Of these 22 cases, no further action was recommended in 12 cases and further
action was recommended in respect of seven. In terms of the further three
cases, the union noted that there were discrepancies in these numbers and
had asked the department for clarity.

Racist DA

Meanwhile DA shadow minister of basic education, Gavin Davis, said SADTU was
attempting to intimidate Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga. Davis
said in a statement: "The Jobs For Cash report will show how SADTU-aligned
officials are taking bribes in return for allocating teaching posts.

"It will also show how six out of nine provincial education departments have
been captured by SADTU."

Caluza responded, saying the DA should not get ahead of itself. "The DA is
the same racist formation that throughout its life has survived on the
oppression of the black person in SA," she said.

The union said it supported a national decision to take the department to
court to defend itself.
