SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande believes the Nkandla Constitutional
Court judgment should be a wake-up call to the ANC and its alliance
partners.

Nzimande spoke at a ceremony honouring the legacy of Struggle stalwart
Jabulani Mzala Nxumalo on Thursday evening.

Nxumalo was as a political activist and intellectual who joined the ANC and
the SACP at an early age and was exiled. He died at the age of 31 at a
London hospital in 1991.

Nzimande advised leaders to reflect on the lives of fallen heroes such as
Mzala. He referred to the Constitutional Court ruling on Nkandla and
President Jacob Zuma's response, adding that both should be welcomed.

"That apology must be a beginning of a process for self-introspection and
self-corrective measures to be taken by the ANC, its alliance and the
ANC-led government," Nzimande cautioned.

Tracing footprints

Nzimande handed over personal documents of the late activist to the Mzala
Nxumalo Centre for the study of South African society. It was founded to
trace Nxumalo's footprints while reflecting on his legacy.

The centre's chief executive officer, Dr Bheki Mngomezulu said: "The centre
part of its mandate is to conduct research on issues of national importance
so we will be drawing a lot from Mzala's writings as well."

Mzala's family welcomed the move to honour his dream. His widow, Mpho said
her late husband's writings could teach others about being more patriotic
about their country.
