Right-Wing Bid to Oust Dilma Rousseff Goes to Deputies

The Morning Star, London, 13 April 2016

“Legislative Coup” plotters took a major step forward on Monday when a
congressional committee voted to refer impeachment of President Dilma
Rousseff to the Chamber of Deputies.

The special congressional commission voted 38-27 to recommend continuation
of the impeachment process.

Before the vote was taken, opposition deputies festooned their desks with
signs reading: “Impeachment now,” while Rousseff supporters chanted: “Coup,
coup, coup.”

The Chamber of Deputies is set to vote on the proceedings on Sunday. If
two-thirds of the chamber vote in favour, the president could be referred to
the Senate, which has the power to put her on trial and ultimately drive her
from office.

Ms Rousseff faces removal from the presidency over allegations that her
government broke fiscal rules to mask budget problems by shifting around
government accounts before her 2014 re-election.

Opposition parties claim that sleight-of-hand accounting decisions allowed
her to boost public spending to shore up votes.

Ms Rousseff denies any wrongdoing and has not been charged with any crime.
Daily paper Estadao reported on Monday that 298 of the 513 deputies support
impeachment — short of the 342 needed — with 96 still undecided.

The president accuses the opposition of plotting a legislative coup d’état
in a bid to replace her with someone closer to the corporate sector.

Ms Rousseff denies involvement in the “Car Wash” corruption scandal linked
to the Petrobras state oil company and a parliamentary commission cleared
her of wrongdoing in October 2015.
