Syria Smashes Isis on Liberation Day

The Morning Star, London, 18 April 2016

Syria's government celebrated victories over foreign-backed terrorists
yesterday, noting that they coincided with the 70th anniversary of
independence from French colonial rule.

Islamic State (Isis) offensives in the east of Damascus province, the
south-east of Aleppo province and the city of Deir Ezzor were all thrown
back over the weekend.

Retired air force officer Ismael al-Atrash - whose father commanded the
1925-27 Syrian uprising against the French - compared the country's current
plight with the days of colonialism, saying: "Syrians are facing a similar
act of aggression perpetrated by [religious] terrorists and backed by world
countries."

Retired lieutenant Mahmoud al-Shaqa added: "The largest victory will be when
we defeat terrorists, their supporters and all those who wish Syria ill."

Netanyahu gloats

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the Golan
Heights, occupied since the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, and vowed that they would
never be returned to Syria.

He gloated that Syria would never return to its pre-civil war strength and
vowed that he would only support moves to stabilise the country if they did
not threaten Israel's "security."
