Morning Star.png POLISARIO Warns its Battle for Independence Could Reignite The Morning Star, London, 27 April 2016 Western Sahara's POLISARIO Front warned yesterday that war in Africa's last [mainland] colony could reignite if the UN does not set a date for a long-delayed independence referendum. Bachir Mustafa Sayed, minister adviser for POLISARIO Front secretary-general Mohammad Abdulaziz, told a press conference in Madrid that it was not enough to restore the recently expelled United Nations peacekeeping mission. Morocco expelled most of the UN's MINURSO referendum and peacekeeping mission from the Western Sahara last month in anger at UN secretary-general Ban Ki Moon's reference to its 41-year occupation as such. He made his comments on a visit to the huge Tindouf refugee camp in neighbouring Algeria, where POLISARIO is based. Mr Ban has recommended extending the mission's mandate until 30 April 2017 and the UN's Security Council is expected to vote on it tomorrow. Last week Mr Ban warned that the expulsions could be exploited by "terrorist and radical elements" and lead to full-scale war. Mr Sayed downplayed speculation that Algerian support for Western Sahara independence could wane if the health of long-time Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika deteriorates. The 79-year-old leader suffered a stroke in 2013, only rarely makes televised appearances and is always seen in a wheelchair. He was in Geneva this week for medical tests. "The Algerians have reaffirmed that they are on the side of the Saharans in any situation," Mr Sayed said.
