Unions Confront Pearson

The Morning Star, London, 29 April 2016

Private education giant Pearson will be confronted by teaching unions at its
annual general meeting today over claims that it capitalises on children’s
education.

The National Union of Teachers (NUT) and unions from Europe, Africa and the
US will attend the meeting to support a resolution on behalf of more than
100 Pearson shareholders.

They are calling for the firm to review its “damaging” business model after
it was accused of promoting high-stakes testing, an “exam factory culture”
in schools and the spread of profit-making schools in developing countries.

NUT general secretary Christine Blower said: “The education market is worth
£3.4 trillion.

“Not surprisingly there has been an expansion in the number of businesses
seeking to make a profit from this.

“Pearson Plc is one such leading ‘edu-business’ with operations in over 80
countries.

“Their promotion of high-stakes tests is undermining the ability of schools
to provide a well-balanced and broad curriculum, while its involvement with
low cost private schools in the Global South is jeopardising access to
education for many children.

“Education is a human and civil right and a public good, for the good of
learners and society not private profit.”
