SADTU calls for drastic action in Vuwani

The country's biggest teacher union has called for drastic action after
schools were burned in Vuwani.

The South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU) said pupils in Vuwani
cannot be denied the right to education.

"What we are saying is whatever the case may be, let teaching and learning
continue. We will continue calling on the government in particular.

"And we made it clear in our statement that we released that we are actually
calling on the government to declare Vuwani a national disaster area,
because we are saying whatever happens, no matter how long it takes," said
SADTU's Xolani Fakude...

"We saw what happened in the Northern Cape. 54 schools were closed (for)
about three months. And what we're saying (is) we cannot risk with the
future of our children.

"(Vuwani) must be declared a national disaster zone, which means resources
must be allowed to move into the area, the learners there must continue to
learn."

Authorities have dismissed reports that tribalism is also a contributing
factor to the violent protests.

"The province of Limpopo is one of the provinces that since 1994 we were
able to amalgamate three governments from Lebowa, Gazankulu and Venda," said
Limpopo Cooperative Governance MEC Grace Makhurupetje.

"We've been a peaceful province since 1994 and the issue of tribalism cannot
arise now in the area."
