SADTU dares Peter Ramothwala, The New Age, Johannesburg, 9 May 2016 THE South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) has dared Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga to release the so-called jobs for cash report and face court challenge. The teachers' union claims the ministerial task team (MTT) had refused to effect amendments to the final report after it had made submissions on the allegations. SADTU general secretary Mugwena Maluleke said the preliminary report had contained allegations about the corrupt state of the tripartite alliance, the ANC, COSATU and the SACP. "Some of the individuals named in the report (SADTU members) and organisations were not given the opportunity to make submissions. "If the report is released, we will study it and definitely go to court," Maluleka said. "The MTT should consider our submissions, give us evidence on the allegations in the preliminary report or expunge those allegations without proof." Last week Motshekga held bilateral meetings with the National Teachers Union (NATU), the National Professional Teachers Association (NAPTOSA), SADTU, Suid-Afrikaanse Onderwys Unie and the Professional Educators Union before again postponing the release of the report. Department spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, said emanating from these consultative meetings with the minister, stakeholders had requested more time to refine their input and responses to the report. "The MTT, with the support of the minister, agreed to give stakeholders the opportunity as requested and therefore the release of the report will be postponed for two weeks to allow for these processes to be concluded," he said. Give in, Gavin Meanwhile the DA's shadow minister on basic education, Gavin Davis, was adamant that Motshekga's failure to release the report has nothing to do with matters of process, and everything to do with pressure from SADTU. "Every time it looks like Motshekga has found the resolve to take on SADTU, she backs down again. "What will it take for her to break SADTU's stranglehold on our education system? "Motshekga has not named a new date for the release of the Jobs for Cash report, and instead set a vague deadline of 'two weeks'. But it is difficult to take her promises seriously any more. "Motshekga's latest failure to release the report is an admission of her own powerlessness. It is clearly SADTU, not Minister Motshekga, who calls the shots in our education system. "If it ever sees the light of day, the Jobs for Cash report will show that six out of nine provincial education departments have been captured by SADTU. Minister Motshekga's failure to release the report today suggests that she has been captured as well," he said.
