SA, Venezuela commit to strengthening relations

South Africa and Venezuela have committed to further strengthening existing
political and economic relations.

This following the visit of Venezuelan Vice President Aristobulo Isturiz to
Pretoria.

The visit forms part Venezuela's larger objective of strengthening ties with
member countries of BRICS countries, which include Brazil, Russia, India,
China and South Africa.

Relations between Pretoria and Caracas, which were established in 1993, have
blossomed over the years.

Venezuela hopes to benefit largely from Pretoria's experience in the mining
industry and co-operations in areas such as education, pharmaceuticals and
tourism sector.

Isturiz says South Africa's participation in several international bodies
makes it an important partner for further co-operation.

"Today's South Africa is amongst the group of 77.today, no country can work
on its development alone. The unity of Venezuela and South Africa can
contribute well in developing the South to South relations."

South Africa and Venezuela have a Memorandum of Understanding regarding
bilateral consultations and a Framework Agreement on Cooperation which was
signed in 2008.

Deputy Minister of International Relations, Luwellyn Landers, says political
relations between both countries are also solid.

"If one takes into consideration the fact that at a party to party level,
both the ruling party in South Africa and in Venezuela have a long standing
relationship. So at a bilateral level, it assumes similar importance. The
meeting with the Venezuelan delegation held with our top six at Luthuli
house reiterated the importance of keeping both relationships at a parallel
level and it was agreed that at a party to party level, these will be
revived."

Isturiz also paid a courtesy call to former ANC Women's League president and
stalwart, Getrude Shope.

Shope attracted the interest of the Venezuelans due to the role she played
in advancing the rights of women during South Africa's liberation struggle.
