Communists to join Philippines Government if US pulls out Troops

The Morning Star, London, 19 May 2016

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) welcomed president-elect
Rodrigo Duterte's offer of four cabinet posts yesterday - on condition that
US troops leave the country.

Following his election on May 9, Mr Duterte said he may offer it the cabinet
posts of agrarian reform, environment, social welfare and labour.

The party said: "The CPP and the revolutionary forces welcome the
possibility of joining presumptive president Duterte in an alliance
government," the party said, "whether in the form of assigning cabinet
positions to the CPP or its endorsees or some other more radical form of
unity government."

It said any alliance should be based on principles such as social justice
and national sovereignty, including an end to the presence of US military
forces fighting other guerilla groups.

The Maoist CPP and its armed wing, the New People's Army, have waged a
guerilla war against the government since 1969.
