Prosecutor Appeals Decision Affecting SA President

The Morning Star, London, 24 May 2016

National Prosecuting Authority director Shaun Abrahams announced yesterday
that South African state prosecutors would challenge a High Court ruling
that they should review a 2009 decision to drop corruption charges against
President Jacob Zuma.

Mr Abrahams said that his office was independent and that he would be
seeking leave to appeal to the Supreme Court against the High Court ruling.

He added that this was an issue that affected the separation of powers and
that the ruling "has far-reaching ramifications."

Mr Abrahams insisted that he did his job "without fear, favour or prejudice"
and that no-one had influenced his decisions.

High Court Judge Aubrey Ledwaba described the 2009 decision as "irrational"
last month in response to a case brought by the pro-business opposition
Democratic Alliance.

A judge-led inquiry reported in April that it had found no evidence of
corruption or fraud by any government officials at the time the 1999 arms
deal in question was made.
