New Age2.png Nhleko challenges SACP Police minister slams the SA Communist Party for questioning the integrity of the SA Police Service Dennis Cruywagen, The New Age, Johannesburg, 25 May 2016 Police Minister Nathi Nhleko has come out batting strongly for the leadership of the South African Police Service and slammed the South African Communist Party (SACP) for questioning their integrity. At a press briefing yesterday, he spoke about the SAPS and the public discourse about it during the past few days. "We have taken a position to stop and clarify some issues. Particularly given the fact that there have been a number of issues in the public space recently," Nhleko said. "In a sense, everything has been said about us and for us and we just do things. It can only be correct for us to begin to clarify some of the matters." Accusations that some officers were from the apartheid era were extremely divisive. "It is an issue that cannot be taken to its logical conclusion. It has the potential to tear the country apart," Nhleko said. Emphasising that there were no step-South Africans, he said: "So for us, the manner of argumentation is irresponsible and unsustainable and because we work in the security environment we can advise all and sundry - just simply don't go there. "It's not worth our efforts. We must work for unity and not division." Defending the head of the National Prosecuting Authority, Shaun Abrahams, Nhleko said there was a growing tendency to attack public officials. "That tendency is dangerous." He referred to the political criticism of Abrahams, which was made after the latter had resolved to appeal a court decision that charges against President Jacob Zuma should be reinstated. Some of the criticism, he said, was that Abrahams was there to serve the political head of state. People like Abrahams did not have a political platform from which to defend themselves and it was unfair to subject them to criticism. Taking a swipe at the SACP, Nhleko condemned it for claiming the Hawks investigation into Gordhan was politically motivated. He found it puzzling, he said, that the party was criticising others because of rumours. "The SACP statement issued alleges political motivation as the real reason. "We dispute this and challenge not only the SACP but all South Africans to show us one political organisation whose members have not, at one time or another, faced the focused eye of law enforcement or any one organisation that has not had its members investigated for one reason or the other." Nhleko urged those with information which the police did not possess to make that information available. As to the allegations swirling around the alleged involvement of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan with a SARS rogue unit, he was clear: "There are no charges. There can only be charges as and when an investigation is completed. "Therefore, it's incorrect for us to be talking about an investigation. An investigation has to be completed."
