COSATU denounces Capitec Bank

for threatening and intimidating workers for joining

SASBO

The Congress of South African Trade Unions is angered by reports of
intimidation directed at Capitec employees, by the bank's management, for
having joined a union of their choice SASBO. The federation has been
intensifying its recruitment campaign, in Mafikeng, North West, that saw
thousands of workers signing up to join COSATU unions, including SASBO. It
is worrying to then hear that these workers have been receiving threatening
messages for having exercised their right of choice and association as
enshrined in the Constitution.

COSATU has noted with alarm the anti-worker and anti-union tendencies by
Capitec Bank. It is not for the first time that this bank is accused of
bullying tactics against workers for exercising their rights. They were
amongst the intransigent employers, who threatened workers against attending
May Day celebration earlier this month. The bank management issued a
threatening [notice to] those workers who wanted to attend May Day
celebrations despite May Day being a public holiday.

We want to caution Capitec Bank that they cannot have their cake and eat it.
They have strategically located themselves as a bank that banks the working
class and they cannot afford to then declare a war against the same working
class and hope to win. We are going to intensify our recruitment targeting
this bank because it seems that they have convinced themselves that the laws
of the country do not apply to them. We are ready to confront all those
employers, who think that they can get away with keeping their employees
away from joining unions, so that they can continue with their exploitative
tendencies.

The 12th National Congress of COSATU and the recently held CEC made it very
clear that we need strengthen our fight back against employers through mass
mobilisation. Capitec will fold against the strength of our mass
mobilisation and we call on all its employees to continue to join SASBO in
their numbers, so that they can use their numbers to fight back against poor
pay and working conditions.

We are also issuing a call to all other COSATU unions to heighten their
solidarity work and support SASBO's struggles against Capitec in North West
and around the country. If we are pushed further by this bank, we will
organize a targeted nationwide campaign against it bank in defence of the
workers.

All workers to the front!

Down with reactionary employers!

Forward to workers unity!
