Kurdish Militia Moves on Isis-Controlled Town

The Morning Star, London, 3 June 2016

Syrian Kurdish separatist militia fighters advanced on the northern town of
Manbij yesterday, gaining ground from Islamic State (Isis) on the west bank
of the Euphrates River.

The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces - mainly the Kurdish YPG - broke out
of its narrow salient west of the Tishrin dam to the north and south.

They also used pontoon bridges to cross the river upstream of the dam,
capturing the village of Hammam.

The SDF fighters advanced as far south as the village of Mustafa Hemade and
west to within six miles of Manbij.

The advance could threaten the Isis-controlled town of Jarabulus on the
Turkish border, which could in turn prompt retaliation by Ankara.

To the south-east, a large force of Syrian troops and paramilitaries was
gathered in Ithriya for a push towards the Isis stronghold of Raqqa.

Syrian media reported that a motorcycle bomb detonated outside the Khulafa
al-Rashideen mosque in the north-western city of Latakia after afternoon
prayers, killing and injuring an unspecified number of people.
