SADTU wants school arsonists punished

Says 'agents' and 'handlers' must be exposed

TMG Digital, The Times, Johannesburg, 3 June 2016

The South African Democratic Teachers Union's (SADTU) national leadership
has condemned the burning of schools during community protests, and called
for increased protection of teachers and pupils.

"We may not have the full merits and demerits of the various cases that led
to the burning of infrastructure, what we know is that the destruction
cannot be a solution," SADTU said in a statement on Friday night after a
meeting of its national executive committee.

"We urge the law enforcement agencies, particularly those within the
intelligence space to get to the bottom of this trend to ensure that the
guilty can be prosecuted and their handlers can be exposed," the NEC
resolved.

"Our children's future cannot and should not be used as a bargaining tool to
find immediate solutions".

The teachers union said that practical steps must be taken protect the
teachers and pupils at schools. "Those who are responsible for the violence
must be apprehended."

SADTU, noting the recent violent protests on university campuses nationwide,
claimed "agents of a regressive agenda masquerading as dissatisfied
students" were to blame for the destruction of infrastructure at
institutions of higher learning.

Commenting on the SABC's controversial ban on showing violent protest
footage, SADTU's leadership said:

"The NEC fully supports the SABC decision not to broadcast this violence
because we as teachers are responsible for building a violence-free society.
We fully understand that the SABC will still provide the public with
impartial, accurate and balanced information about violent protest without
having to celebrate violence by showing such shocking visuals".
