NUM5.jpg The National Union of Mineworkers, Press Statement, 8 June 2016 NUM strongly condemns publicity-seeking postures by Mathunjwa The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is shocked and disturbed to hear that AMCU President Joseph Mathunjwa accused NUM of holding secret meetings with Northam Platinum management. Mathunjwa also accused NUM of having started violence in cahoots with the police .He was being interviewed on SAFM this morning. We are also extremely worried that the SAFM did not give the NUM the right to reply. These are serious allegations and for the SAFM not to give the NUM a right to reply it means that they are in cahoots with this pathological liar. This is a known pathological liar who is a darling of the media and they publish everything that he says without verifying. This pathological liar and the unelected permanent President, membership officer, and administrator of AMCU always wants to blame the NUM for everything. We are calling on the unelected permanent President of AMCU to fight monopoly capital and stop telling lies about the NUM. The NUM can confirm that as a recognised and majority union at North Platinum had a meeting with the management and police on Monday and Tuesday to try to find a lasting solution after our member was brutally gunned downed last week Sunday. We are also empowered in terms of the Labour Relations Act to hold meetings with the management and they are not secret. AMCU is not a recognised union at Northam Platinum. Since last year, five NUM members had been killed and the perpetrators are still at large and they have not been arrested. Some of the perpetrators are employees of Northam Platinum. The NUM as a recognised union had meetings with the police and the management to deal with the safety of its members who are being killed. NUM members are truly worried about their safety. The NUM , the police and the mine management are going to address a mass meeting today with the members to brief them of the outcomes of the meeting that we had last night. The mass meeting will start at 11 am or 12 pm. The stakeholders will then have another meeting at 1 pm today. Members of the media are invited to attend and report.
