Morning Star.png YCLSA Slams Israeli Call For Water Charges The Morning Star, London, 10 June 2016 South Africa's Young Communist League condemned Israel yesterday for promoting water as a mere commodity for sale. At an Israeli embassy event on Monday, Professor Eilon Adar, director of the Institute for Water Research at Ben-Gurion University, argued that people only start to appreciate water when there is a price tag attached to it. He said: "Water is basically food and food has value. Without food, people can't survive." "People have a right to food and they have a right to water," he said, but: "They pay for food so they must pay for water." The Young Communist League pointed out that Israel throttles water supplies to Palestinians in the occupied territories in favour of illegal Israeli settlements. "This terrible abuse and insult of the most basic right of water is yet another reason for our activism and solidarity with the people of Palestine," league spokesman Khaya Xaba said.
