MK probes Gupta 'hatred'

Veterans chairperson Kebby Maphatsoe says they are opening investigation
into origins of attacks against family

Amid escalating tensions between the ANC and the SA Communist Party (SACP)
over the recent conclusion of a probe into "state capture", the ANC's
military wing said it would conduct its own probe on the "hatred" shown
towards the Gupta family.

Umkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) chairperson Kebby
Maphatsoe said the military wing of the ANC would not allow President Jacob
Zuma to be "attacked" by the SACP over allegations that the Gupta family
used their proximity to Zuma to get business from the state.

"We are opening our own investigation on where the hatred comes from. We are
beginning to doubt that this is innocent, it might be coming from somewhere.
The hatred worries us," Maphatsoe said.

He said that the "posture of the SACP" towards the matter was also a cause
of concern.

"We respected them so much. Why are they putting pressure on the president
to distance himself from the Guptas? The SACP is wrong."

This follows heightened scrutiny of the Gupta family over alleged
irregularities with regard to Eskom's awarding of a contract to the
Gupta-owned Tegeta Exploration and Resources. This comes hot on the heels of
the ANC's national executive committee (NEC) meeting's decision to close its
"state capture" probe.

Maphatsoe said in the absence of written or oral submission from witnesses
in the investigation, the ANC's decision to close the investigation had to
be respected.

"The NEC closed the Gupta issue," he said.

Alex Mashilo

SACP spokesperson Alex Mashilo described the MKMVA's imminent probe as a
"spurious and factional process".

He threw down the gauntlet, challenging Maphatsoe to address his concerns
with the SACP.

"Kebby Maphatsoe never contacted the SACP. He knows where to find us if he
wants to engage with the party," he said.

Mashilo said that Maphatsoe was deviating from the ANC's 2015 alliance
summit decision to take a hard-line stance against the threats of corporate
capture on the tripartite alliance.

"The July 1 2015 alliance declaration identified corporate capture as a
problem that must be dealt with. Any deviation from the declaration is
factional and will have no support from the SACP," he said.

Sdumo Dlamini

Congress of South African Trade Unions president Sdumo Dlamini yesterday
moved to downplay the conflict, saying the focus of the alliance partners
should be centred towards building unity.

"We have been consistent that we need to build unity in our movement. We
have to do everything possible to strengthen it," he said.
