Communist leaders not 'tainted'

Jeremy Cronin, Letters, Business Day, Johannesburg, 14 June 2016

Natasha Marrian (Tainted communist party needs solid spring-cleaning, June
9) lauds the South African Communist Party (SACP) for the stance of our
recent central committee on the Gupta family, among other things.

However, the main thrust of her column is that the communist party should
clean out its older generation of "tainted leaders".

I've no personal problem with a very capable younger generation of
communists taking over in 2017 at our July congress. However, Marrian's
accusation of "taint" requires qualification, in particular her argument
that, "SACP deputy chairman Thulas Nxesi led the Cabinet task team on
Nkandla, which found no wrongdoing by (President Jacob) Zuma".

The public protector also found no wrongdoing by Zuma. Advocate Thuli
Madonsela ruled, however, there was personal benefit and a reasonable
portion should be repaid.

Nxesi was appointed public works minister at the end of 2011, several years
after public works expenditure on Nkandla had occurred. In 2012, he
established a task team to investigate departmental wrongdoing on Nkandla.
In January 2013, the team's findings were published and shared with the
public protector.

The remedial actions proposed by Nxesi's task team were immediately acted
upon by the department. A year later, the public protector's published
remedial actions to be undertaken by public works coincided with those
already under way. Madonsela has acknowledged this, commending public works
for implementing remedial actions long before any Constitutional Court
judgment.

It's instructive the EFF and DA, no friends to the SACP or ANC, didn't cite
Nxesi as a respondent in their court case. Marrian accuses when even our
loudest opponents refrain.
