Delhi Confident China Will Back Nuclear Supplier Bid

The Morning Star, London, 20 June 2016

India's government said yesterday it was confident that China would join the
US in backing its bid for membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group of
nations.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said that, while China did not
oppose India's entry into the group controlling access to nuclear
technology, it has raised objections relating to criteria and processes.

India has not ratified the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, a condition for
membership.

Asked whether China was linking India's membership of the nuclear group with
fellow applicant and nuclear-armed rival Pakistan, Ms Swaraj said: "India is
not yet a member of the group and it has no say on the membership of any
other country."

"We will not oppose any other country's membership, but would like it to be
decided on merit."

The group is focused on restricting nuclear proliferation by restricting
access to bomb-making technology.
