Morning Star.png Irish Communists Back Brexit Vote Call for more solidarity Morning Star, London, 29 June 2016 Irish communists have welcomed the Irish Confederation of Trade Unions' acceptance of the historic Brexit vote. In a statement yesterday the Communist Party of Ireland (CPI) backed the confederation's demands that commitments given during the campaign are lived up to. "In doing so we recognise that it was under Cameron and the EU that the NHS was attacked, that foodbanks have become a norm and that job security has hit the zero levels," said CPI chair Lynda Walker. "We call upon the labour, trade union and community movement to unite in the struggle to ensure maximum benefit for people freed from EU austerity and anti-public-sector directives," she said. The CPI statement called on the Northern Ireland Assembly "to provide a programme of action that will ensure stability, employment and human rights. "The vote against the EU is a rejection by the left of the straitjacket economics of the EU," it said.
