SABC.png COSAS calls for shutdown of W Cape schools SABC, 29 June 2016 The Congress of South African Students (COSAS) has called for a shutdown of all schools in the Western Cape when the third term resumes. COSAS says the move is in protest against what it calls the perpetration of corporal punishment in some schools. "Corporal punishment is growing and growing in the schools that's the major issue and another thing it's racism in the school and privatisation of the school, but that takes away powers of learners in that manner of the schools," says provincial chairperson, Michael Mayala. The South African Democratic Teachers` Union (SADTU) has also condemned corporal punishment in schools, but appealed to pupils not to disrupt schooling. "We as SADTU believe that corporal punishment has been banned, it doesn't have place in schools. We've been advocating this to our members over a number of months so we support COSAS call for no corporal punishment in our institutions and we will engage them not to disrupt the schools," says provincial secretary, Jonovan Rustin. Shelver In reaction to their call for a shutdown, the Western Cape Education Department has challenged student organisation, COSAS, to come forward with evidence of corporal punishment in schools. A spokesperson for the Provincial Education Ministry, Jessica Shelver says a survey done between 2009 and 2012, has found that the province has the lowest rate of corporal punishment cases. "COSAS raised one issue of corporal punishment with the minister when she met them in April and this case was dealt with immediately and remedial action was taken. If COSAS are aware of any other issues they are well aware that the minister has an open door policy and we would urge them to bring those matters to our attention instead of grand standing."
