After this article went to press, a total of ten unions made a joint
statement opposing any kind of leadership coup in the Labour Party.
The parliamentary traitors have the option of starting a Labour Party
constitutional leadership contest, but they are not likely to win.
A strong majority in the Labour Party supports the leader, Jeremy Corbyn.

Unions Expected to Back Labour Leader

The Morning Star, London, 30 June 2016

Jeremy Corbyn was expected to receive a crucial vote of confidence from four
of the country's biggest unions last night.

The general secretaries of Labour-affiliated unions Unite, Unison, GMB and
the CWU held talks over their response to the coup that has been launched
against Mr Corbyn by MPs jumping on the EU referendum result.

The unions, representing nearly three-and-a-half million workers, were set
to stand behind Mr Corbyn against calls for his resignation although accept
that a new leadership contest would be necessary.

The wording of a joint statement was still being hammered out as the Star
went to press.

TSSA general secretary Manuel Cortes added his voice yesterday to the chorus
calling for MPs to respect the mandate given to Mr Corbyn by members just
nine months ago.

He said: "I think it's unbelievable that at a time when the Tories are in
disarray over Europe that Labour MPs have decided to attack our leader.

"The Labour Party is a democratic party. There is a route to challenge our
leader. But instead they chose, in a very petulant, way to declare a strike
against him and walk out en-masse.

"It's absolutely terrible what they've done.

"The role of Labour MPs is to get a Labour government. They don't do that by
attacking the leader of the Labour Party."

Mr Corbyn addressed a rally of young supporters organised by Momentum at
Soas university in London last night.

The pro-Corbyn pressure group also reported a "stunning surge" in support
for the #KeepCorbyn campaign on social media, which is now reaching five
million people per day.
