Vuwani exams 'off to a good start'

Steven Tau, The Citizen, Johannesburg, 12 July 2016

Matriculants from the troubled Vuwani area in Limpopo started writing their
mid-year examinations this week. Provincial spokesperson Naledzani Rasila
told The Citizen that candidates, who started on Monday, sat for life
orientation and English papers.

"The exams started off well with no glitches reported," Rasila said. "I was
able to go to one of the centres where the matriculants were taken and
everyone seemed upbeat."

About 1 985 matriculants were taken to three different camps in the wake of
the tense situation in Vuwani and other surrounding villages.

Rasila said no decision had been taken about the resumption of schooling for
pupils in grades 1 to 11. They had not been to school for more than three
months following the outbreak of violence in May, resulting in nearly 30
schools being torched and damaged.

"We are still waiting for government processes aimed at bringing normality
and stability to the area to be concluded," Rasila said. "We are ready to
implement our catch-up programme."

Teachers' union Sadtu said the possibility of pupils in grades 1 to 11
repeating classes next year could not be ruled out, stressing how difficult
it would be to recover lost teaching and learning time.
