Morning Star.png US Envoy Leans on Albanian MPs to Bend to EU Demands The Morning Star, London, 20 July 2016 US Ambassador to Albania Donald Lu threatened MPs with "grave and long-term" consequences if they did not back EU-demanded changes to the judicial system. "There will be specific negative repercussions from the US on those political leaders who vote against this reform," Mr Lu told a civil society rally at the parliament offices. Mr Lu's threats came a day after EU parliamentary foreign affairs committee member Knut Fleckenstein warned Tirana that failure to pass the Brussels-dictated laws would jeopardise Albania's bid for EU membership. Soros The so-called "reforms," originally pushed by US billionaire George Soros's Open Society Foundations, include reducing the powers of the Supreme Court and abolishing the government's right to appoint judges to it. The role of the prosecutor-general would be reduced in favour of a "self-governing" body elected by local prosecutors, who would gain more autonomy from government.
