Teachers Protest at Tests as Talks on Dispute Begin

The Morning Star, London, 21 July 2016

Striking Mexican teachers marched in the capital on Tuesday as their CNTE
union sat down to talks with the government over draconian education
"reforms."

Some 1,000 protesters gathered at the national teacher training college in
the centre of Mexico City, carrying banners denouncing President Enrique
Pena Nieto, whose government launched the performance tests in 2013.

The CNTE says the tests do not measure real teaching skills, especially
those vital in rural areas and among indigenous communities, but are simply
an excuse for mass redundancies and privatisation of schools.

At the talks, CNTE leaders were expected to present education officials with
a list of demands for changes to the education reform law, including
abolition of the tests.

The talks began last month after police attacked teachers' protests in
Oaxaca state on June 19, killing 12 people including nine in the town of
Nochixtlan.
