Morning Star.png Ministers Warn of New Coup James Tweedie, The Morning Star, London, 1 September 2016 Venezuela’s government warned on Tuesday of a repeat of 2002’s attempted coup ahead of today’s opposition regime-change protests. Interior and Justice Minister Nestor Reverol said more than 90 suspected paramilitaries — Venezuelans and foreigners — had been arrested in the capital Caracas. Mr Reverol said the detainees were preparing “acts of violence to destabilise the Bolivarian republic” of Venezuela under cover of the march organised by the right-wing Democratic Unity Roundtable (Mud) coalition. “It is presumed there are a high percentage of paramilitaries scant kilometres from the Miraflores Palace [the presidential seat] and for this reason we made a total sweep of this sector.” Agriculture Minister Wilmar Castro said the government had received information that some opposition figures wanted scenes like those of April 11 2002, when unidentified snipers fired on an anti-government march. The army, aided by the private media, took the massacre as pretext for a short-lived coup against late president Hugo Chavez. But, he said, “the people are taking precautions to avoid new incidents. “There are Chavista and non-Chavista people who condemn acts of violence.” On Monday opposition activist Yon Goicoechea, a member of the far-right Popular Will party that led 2014’s deadly regime-change riots, was arrested in the capital with explosive detonators in his possession. Justice First MP Tomas Guanipa claimed police had planted the evidence. At an early counter-demonstration in Caracas on Tuesday, President Nicolas Maduro vowed to jail anyone plotting a “terrorist coup.” “We must defeat the coup d’état without impunity,” he said. “Whoever gets involved in a coup plot, or calls for violence, is going to jail.” “Do they want peace?” Mr Maduro asked. “Do they want democracy? We will have democracy, but if they try to come at me with a coup, with ambushes and violence, the revolution will respond.” Communist Party of Venezuela general secretary Oscar Figuera said that while the opposition had the right to protest, the people also had the right to defend themselves against a “fascist coup” intended to “turn back the wheel of history by violence.” The Organisation of American States denounced the government as a “dictatorship” on Tuesday, alleging a “wave of repression” against protest organisers.
