Attempted Coup in SA Thwarted

Veterans Protect ANC National Office

An attempted palace coup by a faction of South Africa's ruling African
National Congress (ANC) party fell flat yesterday as struggle veterans
turned out to defend the party's HQ.

The Occupy Luthuli House stunt - intended to force ANC and national
President Jacob Zuma and the entire national executive committee to resign -
drew less than 100 supporters.

They arrived to find the streets around Luthuli House in Johannesburg packed
with loyal ANC members, including veterans of armed wing Umkhonto we Sizwe
(MK) in crisp combat fatigues.

Protest organiser Bonolo Ramokhele claimed he had turned away busloads of
their own supporters after "threats of violence."

But the ANC's Khusela Sangoni said the moderate police presence at the event
was "not unreasonable."

"It was about occupying Luthuli House, it was not a peaceful demonstration."

The resignation call was first made two weeks ago by millionaire Sipho
Pityana at the funeral of struggle veteran Reverend Makhenkhesi Stofile.

The ANC in Gauteng - which has been blamed for the loss of Johannesburg and
Pretoria councils in last month's elections - has long adopted an
oppositionist stance to Mr Zuma's leadership.
