Manyi files Ramos complaint

Dudu Dube, The New Age, Johannesburg, 6 September 2016

Former government spokesperson Jimmy Manyi has laid a complaint with the
public protector, this time against former Transnet CEO Maria Ramos.

The complaint relates to a transportation deal signed between Transnet and
Anglo American subsidiary Kumba Resources in 2005.

The public protector's office said it would look into the complaint to
determine whether there is merit and if it has jurisdiction to investigate.

Manyi claims that this agreement favoured Kumba and has led to Transnet
operating at a loss of up to R2bn a year since its inception.

"In 2008 this contract was revised and all penalty, performance and quality
specification clauses were removed," Manyi said.

The agreement will expire in 2028, which Manyi says means Kumba will
continue to have 75% of the work while BEE companies are locked out.

"Black mining companies will continue to struggle, being locked out of doing
business with Transnet until 2028. This should be investigated," he said.

He also took a jab at Ramos's husband, former finance minister Trevor
Manuel, saying this was done under his watch.

"It should be investigated whether this is not a husband and wife
collusion," he said.
