Bongo Counters Ping's Claims of Skewed Election

The Morning Star, London, 8 September 2016

Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba accused his rival Jean Ping yesterday
of electoral fraud and an illegitimate bid to seize power.

Mr Bongo (pictured) told France's Europe-1 radio: "Ping committed fraud" in
his home constituency and others with the help of "cyber-criminals."

But he said: "I am calm. Chaos will not descend."

Mr Ping, Mr Bongo's former son-in-law, who split from his Gabonese
Democratic Party two years ago, called for foreign support for his demands
for a recount of last week's election.

Mr Ping declared victory in the August 27 elections the following day, but
final results on August 31 gave victory to Mr Bongo, prompting violence in
which more than 50 people were killed and 1,200 opposition supporters
arrested.

A very high turnout in Mr Bongo's stronghold Haut-Ogooue province handed him
a narrow victory.

French PM Manuel Valls has called for a recount and US, France and EU
observers have called for individual polling station counts to be released.
