Morning Star.png Army Fights to Liberate Aleppo James Tweedie, The Morning Star, London, 24 September 2016 Syrian forces launched an offensive to liberate the east of Aleppo from US-backed insurgents yesterday. Air force planes flew dozens of missions against the positions of Fateh Halab, a loose coalition of foreign-armed insurgent groups. The Aleppo military command urged civilians still in the besieged east of the city to "keep away from sites and centres of armed terrorist groups." It promised civilians refuge with no fear of arrest or investigation if they fled to Syrian army lines - and an amnesty for those guerillas who had been "misled" but wished to "return to the homeland's lap." Secret text leaked Members of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG), which brings together the foreign powers involved in the Syrian war, were set to meet at the UN in New York again yesterday. UN special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura said the meeting would discuss resuming Geneva peace talks. Mr Mistura described Thursday night's ISSG meeting as "long, painful and disappointing" as the group had failed to revive the ceasefire that collapsed on Monday amid flagrant violations by insurgents. The secret text of the agreement was leaked to the media yesterday. The first paragraph says that the delineation of territories controlled by Isis, the al-Qaida-affiliated Nusra Front and "moderate" armed opposition forces "remains a key priority, as does separating moderate opposition forces from Nusra." Merging, not separating On Thursday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Segei Ryabkov said the opposite had occurred. "We have witnessed the continued merger of rebel groups with universally recognised terrorist organisations all around Syria," "I will not rule out operations against these forces," he said in an obvious warning to the US, following this week's deployment of the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov to the eastern Mediterranean to boost Russian firepower over Syria. US Secretary of State Kerry called for a voluntary no-fly zone to avoid hitting aid shipments, drawing opposition from Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who said that it would hand the advantage to the heavily armed terrorists. "They have mortar shells, tanks, missiles and armored personnel carriers, he said. "They have cannons and artillery batteries but no warplanes." Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticised "attempts on the part of some of our partners to make it so that only unilateral steps are taken by the Syrian government."
