COSATU Mpumalanga Supports SADTU

members who have embarked on an

Industrial Action

The Congress of South African Unions in Mpumalanga fully supports the
thousands of members of the South African Democratic Teachers Union, who
have embarked on industrial action to protest against the attempt by the
Mpumalanga Department of Education to cut down on jobs of more than 1400
members. COSATU rejects this proposal with contempt because of the following
reasons:

. That the attempt by the department is malicious and ridiculous and
views it as self defeat towards creating decent work for all.

. That this attempt will further increase unemployment and cause further
strain to the already ailing job market.

We call upon the department to come back to sanity and emulate what prevails
nationally and preserve the status quo that of maintaining the current post
provisioning norms

. That we will not agree with any proposal or participate in any process
that will lead to the chopping of needed teaching posts in the face of
rising learner enrolment figures.

. That the proposals are malignant to teaching and learning and should be
rejected and resisted with the might of SADTU and COSATU.

. That the employer should source additional funding rather than cutting
essential teaching jobs.

Secondly, COSATU also rejects with contempt the freezing of vacancies or
employment opportunities by the same department. We view this as
counterproductive and insensitive on the part of the department and not
taking account of the high levels of unemployment rate ravaging the
province. We therefore call on the Mpumalanga Department of Education to
hold meaningful engagements with SADTU.

Failure to do so we will be left with no option but not to engage on a full
blown industrial action which will lead to the complete shutdown of service
in the department. Further note that COSATU in the province will lead a
march to the Department of Labour on the 7th October 2016 which marks the
International Day on Decent work, amongst the contentious issues to be
raised is the matter above
