Morning Star.png Unions Get Ready for Day of Action James Tweedie, The Morning Star, London, 28 September 2016 South African trade unions mobilised yesterday for next week's international day of action for decent work. The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and teaching union SADTU called for maximum participation in the one-day general strike on Friday October 7. As part of worldwide events called by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), workers will march for a raft of demands including a ban on employment agencies, a minimum wage, free university education for poor students and defence of collective bargaining agreements. Competition But the day of action faces competition for participants from other parts of the labour movement. It clashes with ITUC rival the World Federation of Trade Unions 17th congress in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal on the coast of South Africa starting next Wednesday. And last Friday South African Communist Party (SACP) second deputy general secretary Solly Mapaila made an impromptu call outside COSATU House in central Johannesburg for mass student protests in demand of free education on October 14. University death Yesterday SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande called for an investigation into the death of a security guard at Johannesburg's University of the Witwatersrand during violent "Fees Must Fall" protests last week.
