Trump Promises Peace

Regime Change Out, Co-operation In

James Tweedie, The Morning Star, London, 3 November 2016

US president-elect Donald Trump promised a "new era of peace" on Thursday
night - vowing to end the regime-change policies of the past.

Addressing a rally in Cincinnati, Ohio, on his victory tour of the
midwestern swing states that secured his victory last month, Trump appeared
to go further than his campaign pledge to work with Russia to destroy Isis,
hinting at cooperation with Syria, Iran and Lebanon.

"We will partner with every nation that is willing to join us in the effort
to defeat Isis and radical Islamic terrorism," he said.

"We will destroy Isis. At the same time, we will pursue a new foreign policy
that finally learns from the mistakes of the past."

No More Regime Change

"We will stop looking to topple regimes and overthrow governments, folks,"
Mr Trump continued.

"Our goal is stability, not chaos because we want to rebuild our country.
It's time."

Under outgoing President Barack Obama - with defeated presidential candidate
Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State - the US overthrew the governments of
Libya and Ukraine and poured arms and money into the five-year insurgency to
overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

New Defence Secretary

Mr Trump also had a surprise up his sleeve when he named General James "Mad
Dog" Mattis as his defence secretary, jokingly telling the crowd: "Don't
tell anyone."

Gen Mattis is a veteran of the US regime-change invasions of Afghanistan and
Iraq, where he played a part in the first and second battles of Fallujah.

He has backed a two-state solution to Israel's occupation of Palestine,
saying the status quo was "unsustainable" and that illegal settlement
building in the West Bank could lead to an apartheid-like situation.

While Gen Mattis has called Iran the main threat to stability in the Middle
East, he accepts last year's nuclear energy agreement with Tehran as a done
deal.

In 2012 he backed arming Syrian insurgents, stating openly that he saw the
conflict as a proxy war with Iran.

Obamacare To Go

Mr Trump also promised to strengthen the country's "depleted" armed forces
and increase police funding, as well as "construct a great wall at the
border" with Mexico.

And he repeated pledges to replace the "Obamacare" health insurance scheme
and provide free childcare to working mothers.

Several protesters interrupted the rally before being ejected.
