*South African Communist Party* *Press Alert, 3 January 2017* *Commemoration of the 22nd anniversary of the death of Joe Slovo, an outstanding liberation and complete social emancipation stalwart* The South African Communist Party will on *Friday, 6 January 2017* commemorate the *22nd anniversary of the death of Comrade Joe Slovo*. The Party will hold the *commemoration ceremony at the Avalon Cemetery in Soweto, Johannesburg, at Slovo’s gravesite*, *starting at 10am*. The event will be addressed by SACP National Chairperson, Comrade Senzeni Zokwana as a keynote speaker from the Party’s senior officials, Political Bureau and Central Committee. Representatives of Alliance partners; the ANC, Cosatu and Sanco, as well as the Young Communist League, will deliver messages of support. *The SACP invites the media to cover the event. * Slovo was an outstanding liberation and complete social emancipation stalwart. He served the oppressed and exploited in various capacities, including in the Second World War fighting against the forces of the German imperialist, Adolf Hitler. He served as SACP General Secretary and by the time of his death he was the Party’s National Chairperson, ANC National Executive Committee Member and the first Minister of Housing after our April 1994 democratic breakthrough. Slovo served as one of the two founding Commanders of the joint SACP-ANC military wing, uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), along with Comrade Nelson Mandela. He also served the MK as its Chief of Staff and was succeeded in this position by Comrade Chris Hani, who again succeeded him as SACP General Secretary. Slovo will among others be best remembered for his intellectual contribution in our struggle for liberation and complete social emancipation. Among others he contributed in the writing of the first ANC Strategy and Tactics in 1969 which clearly set the path to South Africa’s democratic transition. He produced ‘Has socialism failed’ and ‘The South African working class and the national democratic revolution’.
