Russia, Assange ‘Blamed’ for Trump Win

Morning Star, London, 6 January 2016

US Director of National Intelligence James Clapper blamed Russian hackers and
Wikileaks founder Julian Assange yesterday for Hilary Clinton’s election defeat.

The top spook told the Senate armed services committee he was convinced that
Russia had hacked the emails of Ms Clinton’s campaign director John Podesta,
which were subsequently published by WikiLeaks. US officials have yet to back
up their claims with any evidence.

Pressed by Republican Senator John McCain on whether the actions constituted an
“act of war,” Mr Clapper said that was “a very heavy policy call.”

Mr Clapper also rejected of criticism of US intelligence agencies by
president-elect Donald Trump.

He told Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill: “There is an important distinction
here between healthy skepticism” and “disparagement.”

And he claimed Mr Assange, “holed up” in the Ecuadorean embassy in London, had
“put people at risk” by leaking classified information.

Outgoing President Barack Obama is under pressure to pardon military
whistle-blower Chelsea Manning before he leaves the White House on January 20.
