Suppression of the Communist University Yesterday evening I received a request to add a member to the Communist University Google group. When I went to the group to do so, I was surprised to find this message: "You cannot add members to this group directly."* When I went to the group archive, I found message that follows this one, which means that the group has been closed without reasons being given. The broad allegation of "spam, malware or other malicious content" gives no clue as to what content they might be referring to. The content of the CU has been the same for more than ten years. "Banned Content Warning" "The group that you are attempting to view (Communist University) has been identified as containing spam, malware or other malicious content. Content in this group is now limited to view-only mode for those with access." "Group owners can request an appeal after they have taken steps to clean up potentially offensive content in the forum. For more information about content policies on Google Groups, please see our Help Centre article <https://support.google.com/groups/answer/141369?hl=en-GB> on abuse and our Terms of Service <https://www.google.com/intl/en-GB/policies/terms/> ." After a lot of trouble I found my way to a very intimidating "legal" complaint form, which I filled in with my personal details, as demanded. I got a message back saying: "We have received your legal request. We receive many such complaints each day; your message is in our queue, and we'll get to it as quickly as our workload permits." "Due to the large volume of requests that we experience, please note that we will only be able to provide you with a response if we determine your request may be a valid and actionable legal complaint, and we may respond with questions or requests for clarification." The CU Google Group is suppressed. So far, the SADTU Political Education Forum, the CU Africa Group, and the YCLSA Discussion Forum are all behaving normally.
