ANC calls for calm ahead of planned Friday protests

The ANC is concerned at reports of sporadic violence and intimidation in the
run-up to the planned so-called ‘day of action’ on the 7th of April.

The ANC has not organised any marches to its Headquarters, Chief Albert
Luthuli House, whether in protest or in defence. We condemn reports of
people seeking to take up arms in the name of the ANC.

As the planned day of protests approaches, the ANC calls on all South
Africans to organise in a calm and measured fashion. We should not allow
inflammatory rhetoric from certain elements, including on social media, to
turn South Africans against each other. -

SACP Statement, 22h30, 6 April 2017 [shortened]

Events have forced the SACP to postpone its march that was scheduled to take
place tomorrow in Tshwane to the National Treasury.

A different march, "The march of the people" to the Union Buildings, was
this evening granted a go-ahead by the court to pr‎oceed tomorrow. The SACP
will support this effort and publicly present the demands it would have
delivered through its memorandum to the National Treasury. Solly Mapaila,
SACP 2nd Deputy General Secretary will carry out the task.

to the Union Buildings in Pretoria tomorrow, 7 April 2017. The Presidency
respects the right of South Africans to protest peacefully as enshrined in
the Constitution of the Republic. The Presidency is thus not opposed to the
march by SaveSA to the Union Buildings.
