23 May 2017 SADTU and COSATU in Mpumalanga to picket over a Moratorium on Filling of Posts The South African Democratic Teachers' Union in Mpumalanga will be holding pickets across the province from today to protest the continued moratorium placed on filling of vacant posts by the Director-General of Mpumalanga and the Provincial Cabinet. The pickets form part of a broader programme of COSATU in demand of the removal of the moratorium, which is generally threatening service delivery. Abolished SADTU is concerned that the education sector is the worst affected by Cabinet's decisions as key curriculum, school support and teacher support posts have been summarily abolished from the organogram of the Department. The ANC government has made education its apex priority and we believe as Gramsci once proclaimed that no society sets itself tasks for whose accomplishment the necessary and sufficient conditions do not either already exist or are not at least beginning to emerge and develop. Strengthen. Don't cripple. Secondly, we believe that the capacity of the State must be strengthened to deliver quality public education. The union believes that the imposition of a moratorium on filling of posts and abolishing of vacant posts stands steadfast against the tasks our society has set itself and cripples the capacity of the state to deliver. It must be removed forthwith.
