COSATU Calls for Calm in Cato Ridge

The Province of COSATU in KwaZulu Natal is concerned by the state of affairs
in the Cato Ridge. Cato Ridge is an industrial zone used by various
companies for different business purposes, and the level of exploitation by
some of these companies is quite shocking.

There have been many industrial actions which vary in nature and context,
protected and non-protected. COSATU has been continuously working to
intervene in bringing stability to these workplaces.

Most of these interventions were done collectively with Economic Development
Department and eThekwini municipality because of the involvement of the
community in most of the disputes.

To a greater extent our role in bringing stability in those companies has
been welcomed and appreciated by most the employers and workers, and in most
instances our involvement has produced good results.

We are however concerned about the news from our union leaders in the area
and from some of the employers about the new sporadic uprising by the
community, this has resulted to the closure of many businesses, and thwarted
many workers from going to work.

COSATU KZN calls on all structures of the community, employers, government
and labour unions to work with us in our collective attempt to find an
amicably solution to the problem.

On Monday, the 7th August, COSATU will have a meeting with all the affected
unions, subsequently the government, followed by community and affected
businesses to find a way forward to the ongoing challenges in the area.

For now, as COSATU we are calling for calm to allow the leadership to
resolve the issues at hand, and this must be done in a more responsible and
matured manner to avoid what happened in Mandeni, KwaSithebe where the
community protest left thousands of workers without employment.

We call on all workers not to allow populist bravados to mislead them out of
work.

As COSATU we are also calling on employers to assist create conducive
environment for us to engage with all the stake holders.
